What is VAT Relief on a Stairlift?
Under HMRC VAT Notice 701/7, certain goods supplied to disabled people for personal or domestic use are zero-rated for VAT — meaning the VAT rate is 0% instead of the standard 20%. Stairlifts are explicitly included in this list, alongside parts, fitting, repairs, servicing and maintenance of stairlifts.
In practice, this means that on a typical £3,200 curved stairlift, an eligible customer saves around £640. On a £1,895 new straight stairlift, you save roughly £379. Even on reconditioned models from £1,100, the saving is meaningful.
VAT relief is your statutory entitlement, not a discount or favour from the supplier. Any legitimate UK stairlift company is legally required to apply 0% VAT when the customer qualifies and completes the eligibility declaration.
Do I Qualify for VAT Relief?
You qualify for 0% VAT on your stairlift if all three of the following apply:
- ✓You (or the person the stairlift is for) are chronically sick or disabled. This means a physical or mental impairment with a long-term, substantial effect on your ability to carry out everyday activities — or a condition treated as chronic by medical professionals (e.g. arthritis, MS, Parkinson’s, COPD, heart conditions, severe mobility issues). No doctor’s letter is required.
- ✓The stairlift is for personal or domestic use. It must be installed in your own home (or the home of the disabled person), not in a commercial premises, care home, hotel or holiday let.
- ✓You complete a simple eligibility declaration. A short form (about 60 seconds) where you self-certify that you meet the criteria above. We supply this with every quote.
Frail elderly customers without a formal diagnosis also frequently qualify — HMRC’s definition of “chronically sick” is broad. If you’re unsure, just call us on 0151 314 4884 and we’ll talk it through.
What VAT Relief Covers
VAT relief applies to a wider range of items than most people realise. If you qualify, 0% VAT applies to:
- ✓The straight stairlift or curved stairlift itself
- ✓The installation and fitting
- ✓Spare parts and accessories
- ✓Repairs to your existing stairlift
- ✓Annual servicing and maintenance contracts
- ✓Reconditioned stairlifts from our buy-back scheme

How A.C. Stairlifts Handles VAT Relief
We’ve handled VAT relief paperwork for hundreds of customers across Liverpool, Merseyside, Sefton, Knowsley, West Lancashire and Greater Manchester. The process at A.C. Stairlifts is genuinely simple:
- You contact us on 0151 314 4884 or via our contact form.
- We arrange a free home survey. A real engineer (never a salesperson) measures up and recommends the right stairlift.
- You receive a quote with VAT relief already applied. No need to chase — the 0% rate is built into the price you see.
- You sign the eligibility declaration. Takes about 60 seconds at the point of order or on the day of fitting.
- Installation goes ahead. Most straight stairlifts install within 1-3 working days, curved stairlifts within 1-2 weeks.
We do not charge VAT and ask you to claim it back. The relief is applied upfront, so the price you’re quoted is the price you pay.
VAT Relief FAQs
Do I need a doctor’s letter to claim VAT relief?
No. HMRC does not require any medical proof. You simply self-certify by signing the eligibility declaration we provide. Suppliers are required to keep these declarations on file for HMRC inspection, but they do not need a doctor’s letter, prescription or benefit award.
Can someone else buy the stairlift for me and claim relief?
Yes. A family member, friend or carer can purchase the stairlift on your behalf and claim VAT relief, as long as the stairlift is for your personal use and you meet the eligibility criteria. The declaration just needs to identify the disabled or chronically sick person.
What if I’m elderly but don’t have a specific medical condition?
Old age by itself isn’t enough for VAT relief, but frailty, reduced mobility, or any chronic condition associated with ageing (arthritis, osteoporosis, heart conditions, COPD, severe back issues) almost always qualifies. If in doubt, call us on 0151 314 4884 and we’ll talk through your situation.
Does VAT relief apply if I’m renting my home?
Yes. VAT relief depends on the buyer’s eligibility, not on whether they own or rent the property. You will need your landlord’s permission for the installation itself, but VAT relief still applies.
Can I claim VAT relief on a stairlift in a care home or sheltered housing?
For a private home (including a privately-owned flat within a retirement complex), yes. For shared communal stairs in sheltered housing or for stairlifts in a care home that the operator owns, no — those are commercial installations and pay standard VAT.
Is VAT relief the same as a Disabled Facilities Grant?
No, they’re separate. VAT relief reduces what you pay by 20%. The Disabled Facilities Grant is a council-funded grant of up to £30,000 in England that can cover the entire cost. You can use both: claim VAT relief on a privately-purchased stairlift, or have the council pay for one via the DFG.
