Will a Stairlift Fit Your Terrace?

The Honest Answer for Kensington & Fairfield Houses

Victorian terraces have narrow, sometimes-turning stairs. Not every lift fits every staircase. Four things Chris checks on the free home survey — and honest answers before you commit.

66–71cm+
Width you need

Narrowest terrace stairs on L6 measure around 26 inches (66cm) between banister and wall. The 130 T700’s slimline rail leaves usable clearance on staircases from around 28 inches (71cm) upwards. Chris will measure and tell you honestly on the day.

Hinged rail if needed
The bottom curl

Many Kensington terraces have a “quarter-turn” at the bottom where the stairs meet the hall. The 130 T700 is a straight-only lift — a hinged rail at the bottom can often solve this without the full expense of a curved lift.

~90cm swivel
The top landing

Fairfield and Kensington top landings tend to be tight. The 130 T700’s powered swivel seat rotates so you dismount facing away from the stairs — safer, and it works in landings from around 90cm.

Stannah 260 from £3,200
When we recommend curved

Any real bend, spiral or half-landing means a straight lift will not do it justice. For those we fit the reconditioned Stannah 260 curved from £3,200 with a brand-new custom rail.

Kensington Stairlift FAQs

Do you cover Kensington, Fairfield and Edge Hill?

Yes — L6 and L7 are core coverage. We fit routinely across Kensington, Fairfield, Newsham Park, Edge Hill, Kensington Fields, Sheil Park and the surrounding streets.

Most of the time, yes — the Acorn / Brooks 130 T700 has one of the slimmest rail profiles on the market. Staircases from around 28 inches (71cm) clear width typically take a straight lift comfortably. Chris measures on the day and tells you honestly if yours is on the borderline.

The same fixed prices we charge everywhere. Reconditioned Acorn / Brooks 130 T700 from £1,300 fully installed with 18-month warranty. Reconditioned Stannah 260 curved from £3,200 with a brand-new custom rail. See our full cost guide.

No. Bootle to Kensington is a 15-minute drive down Kingsway — we do not charge travel anywhere we cover, and the written quote you get is the price you pay.

Common in Kensington terraces. A hinged rail at the bottom of a straight staircase can often solve a quarter-turn without the expense of a full curved lift. Chris will assess it on the free survey and tell you honestly what will and will not work.

Straight staircase, stocked reconditioned lift: usually the next working day for genuinely urgent cases (hospital discharge, post-op return). Standard installs typically 3–7 days from survey. Curved lifts need 2–4 weeks for the custom rail.

Most of our customers pay 0% VAT under HMRC zero-rating for disability or chronic illness. Not means-tested, no GP letter needed, we handle the paperwork. See our VAT eligibility page.

Fully curved: we fit the reconditioned Stannah 260. Refurbished carriage plus a brand-new custom rail made for your exact staircase. From £3,200 all-in. Detail on our Stannah page.
