Stairlift Rental vs Reconditioned — The Honest Maths

We Do Not Rent Out Stairlifts · Here Is Why That Is Almost Always Good News for You

Most Liverpool stairlift firms will happily rent you a lift for £50–£100 a month plus a big upfront fee. A.C. Stairlifts does not — and it is a deliberate choice, not a gap. A reconditioned Acorn or Brooks 130 fitted for £1,100 (or a curved Stannah 260 from £3,200) usually beats rental within the first year, and we buy it back for £200 or £250 when you are done. This page shows the real numbers — make your own mind up.

The Numbers, Plainly

Rental vs Reconditioned Over Time

Rental figures are typical UK market prices — some firms charge more, some less. Our buy-back is guaranteed for working Acorn or Brooks 130s (£200) and T700s (£250) at the end of the useful life. Curved lift figures scale similarly but the case is even stronger given rental setup fees are higher for curved.

Being Honest

When Renting Might Actually Make Sense

We are not going to pretend rental is always wrong. Three situations where it can be the right call — and we will say so on the phone if yours is one of them.

You genuinely need it for under 6 months

Post-op rehab with a firm return-to-mobility date. Even then, if the operation has any risk of complications extending the timeline, buying reconditioned with a buy-back plan usually wins.

An insurer is covering the cost

If someone else is paying by the month, the monthly cost is not really the point.

You cannot lay out £1,100 up front

Fair enough — that is a real barrier. Worth asking about interest-free grants: our stairlift grants guide covers Disabled Facilities Grants and local authority schemes.

Rental firms make money by keeping the same lift working across three or four rental cycles. That is a business model, not a service. We would rather fit you the right lift, warranty it for 12 months, and buy it back when you are done — because the maths for the family almost always works out better.

Rental vs Reconditioned — FAQs

Do you offer stairlift rental at A.C. Stairlifts?

No — we do not rent. We fit reconditioned stairlifts to keep, backed by our published buy-back offer when you are done. It is almost always cheaper than renting over any real timescale, and this page shows the exact numbers.

Typical UK stairlift rental is £50–£100 per month plus a £500–£1,000 install fee. Curved rentals cost more. The rental firm keeps the lift; you get nothing back at the end.

Usually within 12 months. Our comparison table above uses realistic figures (£800 install + £75/month rental) and buying breaks even inside a year on every scenario we run.

If you genuinely only need it for under 6 months (post-op with a firm return date, for example), rental can make sense. But if the timeline is uncertain, reconditioned + buy-back is usually cheaper even for “short” use.

Fair question. Options worth checking: a Disabled Facilities Grant from your council (up to £30,000 for adaptations), charity grants for older or disabled people, or asking family to contribute against the buy-back value. Our stairlift grants guide covers all of it.

Yes — that is why we can afford to sell them for £1,100 in the first place. Working Acorn/Brooks 130s: £200. T700s: £250. Stannah 260 curved carriages: price on the phone. Details on our sell your Acorn and sell your Brooks pages.

They usually do while you are renting, but the warranty ends when the lift goes back — and any breakdown call-outs may still be chargeable depending on the firm. A reconditioned lift from us includes 12 months parts and labour, plus 24/7 breakdown support with no call-out charges.

Reconditioned wins on both cost and speed. Our stocked straight lifts fit next working day and cost less than most rental setup fees alone. See our urgent installation page.
