What Is a Reconditioned Stairlift?

Refurbished, retested and resold — the smart way to buy a quality stairlift for less.

A reconditioned stairlift (also called a refurbished, second-hand or pre-owned stairlift) is a previously-owned unit that has been fully inspected, refurbished and tested to manufacturer specification by qualified engineers. Because the original owner no longer needs the lift — they may have moved, downsized, recovered from illness, or sadly passed away — the unit becomes available for refurbishment and resale, typically at 40-60% less than the equivalent brand-new model.

At A.C. Stairlifts we specialise in three of the UK’s most popular and reliable stairlift models: the Acorn 130, the Brooks 130, and the Stannah 260. Every reconditioned unit we install is stripped, inspected, refurbished with new components where needed, and fully tested before going to a new home — and every installation comes with a 12-month parts and labour warranty, identical to a new lift.

Reconditioned stairlifts are an excellent option for any household looking to save money without compromising on safety. They’re often available for faster installation than ordering new (no factory waiting list), they’re a more eco-friendly choice, and they’re absolutely identical in look, feel and operation to new lifts of the same model. Based in Bootle, Merseyside, we can survey and quote within 24 hours and often have reconditioned Acorn 130s ready for next-day installation.

Why Choose a Reconditioned Stairlift?

Six reasons our customers choose reconditioned over brand-new.

Save Up to £4,000

Reconditioned units cost typically 40-60% less than the equivalent brand-new lift. Bigger savings on premium curved models like the Stannah 260.

Same Safety Standards

Every reconditioned stairlift is tested and certified to original manufacturer specification before installation. Identical safety features to new.

12-Month Warranty

Full parts and labour warranty for a year — identical to what you get with a brand-new unit. No catch, no small print.

Faster Delivery

No factory waiting list. We often have reconditioned Acorn 130s ready for next-day install. Curved Stannah 260s typically fitted within 1-2 weeks.

Identical Look & Feel

A reconditioned Acorn 130 is an Acorn 130 — same fabric, same controls, same operation. You genuinely can’t tell from a brand-new unit.

The Eco-Friendly Choice

Extends the life of perfectly good equipment. Less waste, less new manufacturing. The smart, sustainable choice for mobility.

Our Refurbishment Process

Every reconditioned stairlift we supply goes through this rigorous four-step process. We don’t cut corners — your safety depends on it, and so does our reputation as a family-run Merseyside business.

1

We Buy Used Stairlifts

Working Acorn 130, Brooks 130 and Stannah 260 models bought from previous owners across the UK. Selling your stairlift? →

2

Strip & Inspect

Engineers strip down every unit and inspect every component — motor, gearbox, electronics, upholstery, safety sensors — for wear, damage or fault. Nothing slips through.

3

Refurbish & Retest

Replace any worn parts with manufacturer-spec components. Re-upholster where needed. Full functional and safety testing before the unit leaves our Bootle workshop.

4

Install With Warranty

Custom-fitted to your staircase by our local engineers. Full 12-month parts & labour warranty + 24/7 breakdown support included from day one.

Reconditioned Stannah 260

Where Do Our Reconditioned Stairlifts Come From?

It’s a fair question — and we’re proud of the answer. Every reconditioned stairlift we sell has been bought from a previous owner across the UK. Sometimes the owner has moved house, downsized, or recovered from an illness; sadly more often the family is clearing a relative’s home.

We pay cash for working Acorn 130, Brooks 130, Acorn/Brooks 130 T700 and Stannah 260 lifts, then bring them back to our Bootle workshop for full refurbishment. The unit is stripped, inspected, repaired or replaced where needed, retested to manufacturer specification, and reinstalled in a new home — typically saving the next family thousands of pounds.

It’s a local circular economy at work: one family no longer needs the lift, another family gains affordable mobility, and a perfectly good piece of equipment continues serving its purpose for another decade or more.

Reconditioned Stairlifts — Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about reconditioned and refurbished stairlifts.

What exactly is a reconditioned stairlift?

A reconditioned stairlift (also called refurbished, second-hand or pre-owned) is a previously-owned unit that has been fully stripped, inspected, refurbished and tested to manufacturer specification by qualified engineers. It then comes with a full 12-month warranty, identical to a new lift. The result is the same model, the same safety, the same look and feel — for typically 40-60% less than the brand-new price.

Yes. Every reconditioned stairlift we supply is tested and certified to original manufacturer specification before installation. All safety features are identical to a new lift — seat belt, edge sensors, key-operated on/off, soft start/stop, emergency stop and battery backup. Plus you get the same 12-month parts and labour warranty as new.

Typically 40-60% cheaper than buying brand new. On the entry-level reconditioned Acorn 130, you might save around £800. On a premium reconditioned Stannah 260 curved stairlift, savings of £2,000-£4,000 vs new are common. Most customers save significantly more than they expected once they get the figures.

Yes — a full 12-month parts and labour warranty is included with every reconditioned stairlift we install. This is identical to the warranty you would get with a brand-new unit from us. Breakdown support is included 24/7 throughout the warranty period.

We specialise in three of the UK’s most popular and reliable models: the Acorn 130 and Brooks 130 for straight staircases, and the Stannah 260 for curved staircases. By focusing on these models, our engineers are absolute experts at refurbishing, installing, servicing and supporting them.

Reconditioned straight stairlifts (Acorn 130 / Brooks 130) can often be installed within 1-3 working days, sometimes next-day. Reconditioned curved Stannah 260s typically take 1-2 weeks because we manufacture a brand-new custom rail to fit your exact staircase. We can confirm timing during your free home survey.

Yes — identical, in most cases. A reconditioned Acorn 130 is an Acorn 130: the same fabric, the same controls, the same operation. Where original components show wear, we replace or re-upholster as part of the refurbishment. By the time your stairlift is installed, you genuinely cannot tell it from new.

With regular servicing, a reconditioned stairlift typically lasts 10+ years in continued reliable use. Stannah 260s in particular hold value and durability extremely well — we’ve serviced units that are 15+ years old still running smoothly. Annual servicing is recommended to maximise lifespan and keep your warranty in force.

Every reconditioned stairlift we sell has been bought from a previous owner. Sometimes the owner moved, downsized or recovered; more often the family is clearing a relative’s home. We pay cash for these lifts (see our stairlift buy-back service), bring them to our Bootle workshop, fully refurbish them, then resell at a much lower price than new. A true local circular economy.

We’re based in Bootle, Merseyside and cover the whole of Liverpool, Sefton, Knowsley, Wirral and the wider North West — including Manchester. See the areas grid above or call 0151 314 4884 to confirm we cover your postcode.
