What Moves the Price

6 Things That Affect Stairlift Costs

01
Staircase shape

The single biggest factor. Straight staircases use standard rail; curved staircases need a custom-engineered rail, which is why curved stairlift costs start around three times higher — with any supplier.

02
New vs reconditioned

A professionally reconditioned lift typically saves 40–60% against new, with the safety-critical parts inspected and replaced. It is why our prices start at £1,100 rather than £1,800+.

03
Rail length and hinges

Longer flights need more rail. A manual folding hinge (fitted when a doorway sits at the foot of the stairs) adds fabrication work — we include it in your written quote upfront, never as a surprise.

04
Seat and features

Powered swivel seats, powered footrests and premium upholstery all add cost on new lifts. On reconditioned models the spec is fixed, which keeps the price low and predictable.

05
Your old stairlift

With us this reduces the cost: we buy back Acorn and Brooks 130s at £200 (T700s £250) with free removal when we fit your replacement.

06
Urgency

Some firms charge a premium for fast fitting. We do not — next-working-day fitting on stocked straight lifts costs exactly the same £1,100.

Straight lifts fit staircases with no bends or half-landings. Stocked models can usually be fitted the next working day. Straight stairlifts →

Typical UK market, reconditioned£3,000–£5,000

Curved lifts need a rail custom-made for your staircase, so allow 2–4 weeks. The reconditioned Stannah 260 is usually the biggest saving in the whole market. Curved stairlifts →

You will see stairlifts advertised “from £695”. Here is why ours start at £1,100 — and why that is usually cheaper.

Rock-bottom entry prices are usually basic older units, quoted before extras — and often exclude the warranty cover, call-out charges and fitting standard that decide what you actually pay over the years. Our £1,100 is the whole story: a workshop-reconditioned lift with new batteries, fitted personally by the owner, tested, demonstrated, and covered for 12 months parts and labour with 24/7 breakdown support and no call-out fees. One honest number beats a cheap headline.

Stairlift Costs — Your Questions Answered

How much does a stairlift cost in the UK?

UK-wide, straight stairlifts typically cost £1,800–£3,500 new and £1,000–£2,000 reconditioned; curved stairlifts run £4,500–£8,000+ new. At A.C. Stairlifts our fixed fitted prices are £1,100 (reconditioned Acorn or Brooks 130, straight), £1,300 (130 T700) and from £3,200 (reconditioned Stannah 260, curved).

Our reconditioned Stannah 260 curved stairlift costs from £3,200 fully installed, including a custom rail made for your exact staircase. Brand-new curved stairlifts typically cost £4,500–£8,000+ elsewhere, so a quality reconditioned curved lift is usually the biggest single saving available.

The rail. A straight lift uses standard rail cut to length; a curved staircase needs a rail custom-engineered to follow every bend, which is skilled fabrication. That is also why curved lifts take 2–4 weeks while a stocked straight lift can be fitted next working day.

A professionally reconditioned straight stairlift. Our £1,100 Acorn/Brooks 130 goes through a four-step workshop process — strip-down, worn-part replacement including batteries, deep clean, load test — and carries the same 12-month parts and labour warranty as everything we fit. Cheaper routes (private sales, online marketplaces) usually cost more once fitting, batteries and an inspection are added, and come with no warranty at all.

No. The home survey is free, the written quote is free and fixed, and if you ever need us after fitting there are no call-out charges within your warranty. The price we quote is the price you pay.

None. Every A.C. Stairlifts price includes the survey, delivery, professional fitting by Chris (our owner and engineer), a full safety test, a demonstration for the user and family, a 12-month parts and labour warranty and 24/7 breakdown support.

Most of our customers can. If the stairlift is for someone with a long-term illness or disability, HMRC allows VAT-free supply — a simple declaration we handle as part of the quote. Details on our VAT eligibility page.

Sometimes. The Disabled Facilities Grant (up to £30,000 in England, means-tested, via your local council) can cover stairlifts, and some local schemes and charities help too. Our grants and funding guide walks through what exists and how to apply. Be aware council routes can take months — if someone is coming home from hospital, a £1,100 reconditioned lift fitted next day is often the practical answer.

With us it costs nothing — and for popular models we pay you: £200 for Acorn and Brooks 130s, £250 for T700 variants, including free professional removal. See stairlift removal and buy-back.

Pennies. A stairlift trickle-charges its batteries from a normal socket and typically adds only a few pounds a year to an electricity bill. An annual service keeps the batteries healthy and the lift safe.
